Phillis Wheatley Peters

A bold, colourful pair of stockings designed to honour an eighteenth-century black poet: the first woman of African descent to publish a book in Britain and the United States. Wheatley-Peters Poems were groundbreaking texts in their own time, and had an important afterlife, posing, by their very existence, a powerful challenge to the racisim of the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.

This is the fifth pattern in our Bluestocking club, in which we explore the lives and work of eighteenth-century women writers - while knitting our own socks and stockings, in John Arbon's wonderfully woolly Exmoor sock yarn.

Yarn pack includes 2 x 50g skeins of John Arbon Exmoor Sock 4ply (60% Exmoor Blueface, 20% Corriedale, 10% Zwartbles, 10% Nylon; 200m / 219 yds per 50g skein); 1 skein in each shade Bibble Bug and Bell Heather, plus a complementary KDD wee project bag.

Please note that this yarn pack does not include the pattern (currently exclusively available as a part of the Bluestocking club and book)

Grateful thanks to Nicole Pohl, to the KDD bluestocking team, and Mimi, whose legs and feet are depicted here
