New Scottish Colour
Taking inspiration from the colours around us in the Scottish landscape, for the past few years we’ve been gradually developing the palette of Milarrochy Tweed, our flagship fingering weight yarn. To celebrate the yarn’s fifth birthday, we’ve added six new shades, and gathered the whole palette together in a gloriously colourful advent calendar package that you can treat yourself to every day in December, with the additional fun of an inspirational design collection to be unwrapped on December 24th . . .
Not just yarn
The Colour Compass calendar is not just yarn, but includes an exclusive pattern collection and accompanying e-book, to help you develop your colour confidence, explore new palettes and shade combinations, try something different with your knitting, or simply relax while playing with shades and hues - with a gorgeous sweater or range of accessories as the definitive end result. The beautifully packaged advent calendar contains 24 x 25g balls of Milarrochy Tweed, (with the six limited edition shades spaced out for additional surprise across the month).
Knit the new year
Each calendar ball is individually numbered and wrapped in a jolly festive parcel. When you unwrap your final parcel on December 24th, you’ll find your Colour Compass ticket and unique download code, enabling exclusive access to the e-book and design collection, which will go live on December 24th. You can then join us, for our New Year Knitalong, in which we’ll explore the techniques, palettes and new directions in Colour Compass together.
The yarn
Milarrochy Tweed is a blend of 70% wool and 30% mohair. With its beautiful chromatic range, in which tweedy neps enable different shades in the palette to speak to one another, it offers a true celebration of colour, from deeply saturated bold hues to soft intriguing neutrals. Processed for us in Donegal, variegated neps are expertly spun into the fibre to produce a characteristic flecked and speckled look, while the mohair lends the finished yarn a pleasing halo. The six, limited edition shades that we’ve developed especially for this advent calendar mean that we’ve been able to create a celebratory package that’s really bursting with colourful inspiration, and which will offer many hours of joyful knitting way beyond the festive season.
What can you expect from the colours?
An exciting, richly varied chromatic range, in which each shade has been carefully selected to complement its friends and neighbours. Each individual shade has its own distinctive appeal, but because of the way that, across the range, the tweedy flecks echo and balance one another, you’ll discover interesting confluences and connections: sometimes bold and bright, and sometimes quiet and subtle. Milarrochy Tweed takes its name from one of Kate’s favourite Loch Lomond locations: all of these shades have been inspired by the glorious landscape that surrounds us here in Scotland, and all of the colours work wonderfully well together.
Explore the palette
If you’ve never tried knitting with Milarrochy Tweed, this is the perfect opportunity to play with the whole palette, and if you already love this yarn, you’ll discover surprising combinations to take your knitting in brand new colourful directions.
The Colour Compass collection and e-book
Kate is well known for her stranded colourwork designs, but in this collection (helped along the way by special guests) she explores a different range of approaches to colourful knitting, from stripes and slipped stitches to openwork, chevrons, and colour blocks. The Colour Compass collection includes two sweater designs (a pullover and a cardigan) and four different accessories, each of which explores a different way to play with colour. You’ll find that there’s plenty of yarn to knit one of the garments (in any size) or all four accessories, if you choose. Alongside the patterns, the e-book includes useful tutorials, inspiring exercises to help you create palettes, develop a knitting mood board, and successfully combine shades, plus loads of tips, tricks, and colourful inspiration. The collection and ebook will remain exclusive to Colour Compass calendar purchasers until the end of March 2024, when our knitalong concludes.
