Elizabeth Carter

A toe-up sock ‘receipt’ in three sizes—Kate's go-to sock or stocking. The pattern is named for the famous but notoriously shy eighteenth-century bluestocking writer, who liked to knit during the intellectual and sociable gatherings she attended. Carter produced the first English translation of the works of Epictetus and was a fine poet as well as an accomplished linguist.

This is the third pattern in our Bluestocking club, in which we explore the lives and work of eighteenth-century women writers - while knitting our own socks and stockings, in John Arbon's wonderfully woolly Exmoor sock yarn.

Pattern or kit!

Choose "pattern only" (for single PDF / digital download) or "kit" containing 2 x 50g skeins of John Arbon Exmoor Sock 4ply (60% Exmoor Blueface, 20% Corriedale, 10% Zwartbles, 10% Nylon; 200m / 219 yds per 50g skein) in shade Whortleberries, together with a wee project bag and PDF pattern download. The kit price represents a 10% discount on purchasing all these items separately.

After purchase, you will receive an email with a direct download link (to enable you to access your pattern straight away) and unique download code (to allow you to access the pattern via Ravelry, if you wish). We recommend that you download your patterns as soon as your message arrives as the link may expire after a few days. Follow the directions to pop the patterns in your Ravelry library. If you've not received your download instructions within 24 hours of placing your order, please first check any spam / social / promotions folders that may be set up on your account, then email us at info@katedaviesdesigns.com.

Grateful thanks to Nicole Pohl, to the KDD bluestocking team, and Gill, whose legs and feet are depicted here
