Phillis Wheatley Peters
A bold, colourful pair of stockings designed to honour an eighteenth-century black poet: the first woman of African descent to publish a book in Britain and the United States. Wheatley-Peters Poems were groundbreaking texts in their own time, and had an important afterlife, posing, by their very existence, a powerful challenge to the racisim of the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.
This is the fifth pattern in our Bluestocking club, in which we explore the lives and work of eighteenth-century women writers - while knitting our own socks and stockings, in John Arbon's wonderfully woolly Exmoor sock yarn.
