Making Light

For many of us in the northern hemisphere, January and February can be challenging months. The twinkling baubles of the festive season are behind us and spring’s green shoots can seem a long way off. But, if you just look hard enough, you’ll find this time of year is the opposite of gloomy. The stars in the winter sky are at their most spectacular, low light glances gracefully through ocean waves and the bare branches of trees, while landscapes of all kinds sing with colours and textures that are invisible at other times of year. There are so many ways of making light of these dark months, and that’s what we are going to set our minds and hands to during KDD’s brand new club.

The creative heart of Making Light is, of course, the knitting. I’ve really enjoyed myself over the past few months working on a new collection of cold weather garments and accessories designed specifically for this time of year. Exploring our seasonal theme of light and dark, my collection features graphic two-tone colourwork and classic knits that really make the most of bold motifs. Each week, these high-contrast patterns will be released in pairs, accompanied by inspiring short reads and photographic essays that offer fresh perspectives on our theme of Making Light. From the distinctive pleasures of taking a walk at dawn to the importance of darkness in photography, we'll share our favourite strategies for finding uplifting moments, creative joy, and general good cheer at a time of year when many of us might feel at our lowest.

FAQ

What to expect from the patterns?

This collection is all about bringing together light and dark: many of the designs feature stranded colourwork worked in a two-tone, high-contrast palette. Other designs are knitted in a single, solid shade of yarn and feature openwork or twisted stitches. All garments are designed for an adult size range between 30 and 60 inches.

What yarn do I need?

The collection has been designed with KDD’s Ooskit and Schiehallion yarns, and a few designs feature yarn held double for super-cosy winter knits. But you don’t need to knit with our yarn: the patterns in this collection are very versatile and can be made with any yarn from your stash which knits to gauge.
