Stranded with Kate Davies

Would you like to:

*Learn more about the history and heritage of stranded colourwork?

*Understand what makes motifs and patterns really work?

*Gain unique insights into Kate Davies’ design process?

In this 90 minute virtual workshop, Kate will take you behind the scenes of her creative process, introducing you to what’s involved in designing stranded colourwork from start to finish. We’ll begin with an introduction to the history of repeating patterns, focusing on their common cultural heritage and shared structure, before moving on to explore the development of stranded motifs in Nordic and Fair Isle knitting. You’ll learn about how pattern repeats work through symmetry and mirroring, and discover Kate’s personal techniques for reading (and memorising) colourwork charts. Kate will introduce you to some of the nifty tricks she uses to make colourwork patterns engaging and more “knitterly”, illustrating the process with working examples and a selection of her new designs. You’ll get an exclusive preview of Kate’s forthcoming collection, and hear about its inspiration in the landscape and culture of a particular area of Scotland. There will be plenty of time for questions, and you’ll receive an exclusive Stranded workbook (delivered as a PDF download), to enable you to follow along and explore points raised in the workshop later, at your leisure.

Format

The workshop will be delivered as a zoom webinar at 5pm (BST) on Saturday July 26th.  After signing up, you’ll receive a booking confirmation, and two days before the workshop (July 24th) we’ll send you your PDF workbook and webinar link. The workshop will last approximately 90 minutes: Kate will speak for about an hour, followed by half an hour for questions. Attendee microphones will be muted, but you’ll be able to ask any questions, as they arise, in the chat. The session will be recorded, and you’ll have two weeks to listen to the workshop, at your leisure.
